Dinner at Wild Honey @ Scott’s Square

Edit: We went there for dinner again tonight! Hahaha :) This time, we tried pancakes and waffles and more adventurous drinks!

This was my Caribbean Breakfast:

caribbean style waffles

I really liked the pretty presentation. And did you know that inside the waffles were passionfruit cream, and instead of the typical maple syrup, this dish came with a passionfruit syrup! Yummy!

It’s just that because this wasn’t a savoury dish, I didn’t feel like it was dinner I was having, even now – 3 hours later.

And this was my drink: Mandarin Wilderness – an ice blended mix of raspberry, banana, mandarin and honey at Wild Honey. Looks like a berry drink, tasted like bananas.

berry smoothie

This time round, BF also chose a typical breafast dish: Canadian pancakes!

Canadian pancakes

Best pancakes ever according to him, though he said he’d probably need something meaty.

And his drink was this interesting milkshake which tasted so good. No idea what was in it tho!

We’re already planning on what we’d like to try next at this restaurant (though it may be a long while before our next trip here!)

Read below for the original blog post of our first visit there!

A bunch of us headed down to Wild Honey at Scott’s Square for dinner last night to try out their all-day breakfast menu!

It was a strange sensation having breakfast for dinner. Just look at the huge variety of international breakfast cuisines! We took awhile to decide what each of us wanted.

These were what we had:

Norwegian Smoked salmon, poached eggs, avocado, grilled asparagus, salmon pearls on brioche

Aussie Breakfast
Australian rib-eye, melted onion, red & yellow peppers on grilled brioche, fried egg, potatoes, baked beans

We also tried out the drinks menu, which were made mostly of juices. Among the juices we ordered were Mellow Melon, Spicy Citrus and Spicy Berries (if I remember the names correctly).

What we didn’t get to try were the pastry and desserts. Next time, for sure. Just look at these yummys!

Testing Diablo III On a Macbook Air

Edit: I’ve gotten several requests for my macbook air spex so they are. Please note that i turned off all the graphic options because it is too laggy if they were left on:

Processor 1.8 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)

****************

As all of you might have known, Diablo III released an open beta version of the game for this weekend only (until Monday, April 23 at 10:00 a.m. PDT – US time), which means peeps in Asia have until Tuesday to meddle with the game.

Diablo III open beta testing

Before we start, here’s where you can download the Diablo III client!

You’d also need to create a battlenet account and a battle tag at Battlenet

diablo 3 login screen

So let’s talk about the game! I first played it on the boy’s iMac, in all it’s wonderful graphics glory, and then we decided that my Macbook Air should be given a chance to shine too. At first, with all the graphics options on, the game was lagged quite a bit. So we turned off all the graphics options, and had quite a decent gameplay.

diablo 3 characters

I chose to play a female wizard as I normally do when I play RPG games. It makes everything more whimsical in my opinion (now I’m missing my World of Warcraft warlock!)

So you start the game at Overlook Road..

Overlook road diablo 3

And if you walk further down, you’d come to New Tristram, where you discover that zombies are rising from the dead and have to be killed!

zombie attack diablo 3

Well I’m not going to do a walkthrough for the entire game because I’d hate spoilers (also because I’m still at level 8), but here are some screengrabs from the game:

Skills

I love that the wizard race seems so strong. For many creatures, it’s mostly a “one-hit-one-kill” attack. I love feeling all so powerful hahaha. My favourite skill for now is the arcane orb.

diablo 3 wizard screengrab

Though Shock Pulse is pretty good too.

diablo 3 shock pulse skill

Places in the game

I’m a scaredy cat by nature, and seriously the places that the character needs to walk through are creepy. I’d navigate slowly in fear something might jump out at me. Silly, silly Sha.

places in diablo 3

Don’t forget to collect “way points” (equivalent of flight points for you WoW players)!

diablo 3 way point

Creatures

From a girl’s point of view, some of the creatures in D3 are just disgusting, such as Grotesque who looks like the Fat Bastard in Austin Powers. When he explodes, worms come out of him. YUCK. No screengrab of him but here are some of other creatures I managed to capture in combat. Don’t ask me their names, I have no idea.

Dying and Resurrecting

Of course in every game, you die. In D3, it was actually difficult to die. But because I was chasing screengrabs, I died because my character was caught offguard. But resurrecting is easy. Note that once you’re level 10 and above, your items and equipment will suffer damages when you die.

diablo 3 die

Quests

I’m actually really enjoying all the quests! They are interesting with a great story line. No complains so far.

Technical Difficulties

1) It is almost expected that there will be some connectivity issues at this beta stage. But even though I have some difficulty trying to login sometimes, the game is smooth sailing once I get inside.

diablo 3 connection

2) When trying to install the game client, we had some difficulties as we faced errors. We found a quick fix for this:

- search for “agent.db” in your folder
- delete it delete it
- restart the launcher

It should fix it.

I hope you guys enjoyed this post. I’m just happy that I’m able to play it on my dainty Macbook Air!

Battleship Movie Review

Before I begin this blog post, I need to admit that the only reason I watched this movie was because I knew that Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd was going to be in it. I didn’t even know what the show was going to be about (I thought it was a war movie). On the seat next to me was the boyfriend, who had been looking forward to watch the movie.

Alexander Skarsgard in Battleship

So it was a win-win situation.

Gist of it

NASA discovers a planet that has similar conditions to Earth. Excited by the discovery that there might be an alternate planet for earthlings, they sent a powerful signal to that planet. Well they were just asking for trouble, weren’t they? Because residents of that new planet came to visit and they certainly did not come in peace. No sir, they were hell bent on destroying everything they see that has the potential to harm them.

battleship movie aliens

They were really a psychotic, violent breed who won’t stop at anything.

battleship alien attack

That’s the main plot.

Then there’s the sub-plot about two brother: one is a wayward hippie while the other a naval officer who has played his cards right in life. And then of course there’s a love story (to reel in the girls).

battleship movie stills

And then there’s Rihanna. Until now, I still have no idea what was the point of her being in this movie, seriously.

But yeah, the main thing is the vicious alien attacks – just so we get our priorities straight here. ;)

What I liked about it

1) Little did I know that Taylor Kitsch (Mister John Carter himself) was even in the movie. In fact, we both didn’t realize that it was him till the end of the movie. However, he had the exact same effect on me in Battleship as he did in John Carter. At first I didn’t think he was attractive (because he’s all hippy and grubby), but then the more I looked at him, the more I needed to look at him. This came as a really pleasant surprise!

battleship movie image

2) The effects were fantastic. If you love transformers, you’d love this movie. Though at some parts, I felt like I was watching a scene from Titanic, because water came rushing through the ship. It was the whole works!

battleship movie effects

3) Cute love story, something that revolves around a chicken burrito

battleship love story

Conclusion

I surprisingly enjoyed it, as did the boyfriend. Finding out that it was Taylor Kitsch all along was a major plus point in my books. But seriously this is a good action movie that can double up as a good date movie. Guys will dig all the explosions and destructions, and girls can just enjoy the cute boys. One thing about it is that though it was a mere 2 hour movie, it felt as if we were seated in the theater for at least 3 hours. For some strange reason. And oh, don’t forget to stay on till after the credits! Apparently there’s an additional scene. I missed it.

So I give this movie:

Sundown Marathon Registration 2012

I think I’m turning into a running/fitness wannabe.

sundown marathon 2012

Why? Because after barely surviving the Nike Goddess Run (which went better than expected in spite of NO training) which was over a distance of 5km, I have taken up the most natural next challenge: a 10 km run – which I really have to train up for because I’ve never run that far before in my life.

Sometimes I think I have a death wish.

But anyway, if you are like me (running diva wannabe who is dipping your toes into organized runs), or you are already a seasoned runner, one of those who can run 42 km like its nothing – and you’d like to join the Sundown Marathon, here’s where you can sign up for it.

sundown marathon registration methods

Before you can start the registration, you’d need a Hivelocity (the organizer) account, which you can easily and instantly create by submitting a username and password:

sundown marathon 2012 hivelocity account

You can either sign up as an individual or as a group, and I registered as an individual and these are the categories. Obviously I opted for 10km-Women (I’m not crazy enough to opt for a longer distance than that. Still not a single ounce of idea if I’ll even make it through 10km in one piece)

sundown marathon 2012 individual categories

I don’t understand why the further you choose to run, the more you have to pay, lol.

So you’d have to fill up basic info (as usual):

Sundown marathon 2012 registration form

What I found really appealing is the fact that I can customize my name on the bib. Of course I went for “shanobyl”, hehehe :) (I’m the queen of all things novel and ultimate cheap thrills).

sundown marathon customized bib

And for those of you who believe in lucky numbers (and also believe in giving back to charity), you can purchase a bib with a number you desire. This costs an additional $50 and as much as I’d like a 0009 on my bib, I’m not gonna spend that amount on it.

sundown marathon bib number

You can also choose if you’d like an e-certificate or a hardcopy one to be mailed to you (go green, save the earth friends).

Sundown Marathon special items

To wrap up, the main details of the marathon are:

Date: 26/27 May 2012 (depends on the distance you’re running)
Time: 930pm onwards
Venue: Open field, beside Nicoll Highway MRT Station

I have about 1 and a half months to prepare for this, yikes!

For more info on race details, head on down to the Sundown Marathon 2012 official page, where you can find really useful stuff for the race.

Also do check out the Sundown Marathon Facebook Page, where they have running tips, event updates and giveaways/contests!

Nike Goddess Run 2012

Edit: So the Nike Running Singapore Facebook page has uploaded all the individual and BFF timings. To get your and your BFF run times click here! Good luck!

This is mine:

Nike Goddess Run Timing

We aimed to complete it within an hour and we actually finished the run in less than an hour! We were also hoping we wont be ranked 4500th out of 5000 girls, but hey look at us, we are ranked 1532nd and 1533rd respectively! /everything went better than expected/ *thumbs up*

nike goddess run start pen sign

So last Saturday was the Nike Goddess Run that we’ve all been waiting for. The fact that I’m right here typing out this blog post is proof that I did make it out of the run in one piece (albeit the super aching leg muscles)!

emz and sha with board of names

It was a first organized run for both myself and my work bff Emz. So this was us doing our warm up. We look like we are fit and know what we were doing. Truth is, we were barely prepared for it (I didn’t even go for even ONE re-run), but somehow we managed to pull through the 5 km.

sha and emz warming up

By this time, we were getting jittery. We were like, “why are we doing this?” and “can we go home?”. So to calm ourselves down, we did what girls do best. We camwhored.

nike goddess runners tshirt back view

I love this photo for some reason. It’s one of my favourites from the event :)

Here’s us checking out the race route, which made us even more nervous as the fact that we were somehow gonna finish a 5k run started to sink in.

nike goddess run race route map

Soon it was time to actually get to the start pen. But due to very bad event organization, we were in the pen for a good 30 minutes with “reassurance” every 5 minutes that the run will be starting soon. Being in a crowd of 5000 girls made all of us pretty hyped up to get the race started. So Emz and I actually felt better at this point, all geared to go.

in the nike run start pen

After a long wait, the emcees decided it would be a good time passer to do a Kallang wave thing.

nike goddess run wave

It did help (look at Emz, she looks so happy!) but still no reason for the long delay for the run to start. It was getting really hot in the start pen.

And then it finally started and we were OFF!

nike goddess run start line

Run, girls, runnnnn!

girls running

I gotta admit. The first km was the most torturous. It didn’t help that we were barely at the 1 km mark when some girls are already on the return route on the other side of the road.

Also, running in a huge crowd took some getting used to. I love my own space and when I run on my own prior to this, there was nobody around me. Nobody trying to get to my left or right, nobody to trip me over.

We were shocked at just how many girls were so intent on REALLY running (we ran, jogged, walk) and some of them shoved their way through. It’s like chill babe, it’s just a run. It’s supposed to be fun.

In fact between 2 to 2.5 km, we were almost dead from running. But then miraculously at the 3 km mark, we pulled our socks up and became motivated to complete the run – no matter what it takes.

nike goddess run 3 km mark

We look too happy when we were actually both running out of air, LOL. But from then on, for the remaining 2 km, we set goals. Run till (a visible landmark), then walk and this continue till the end of the run. It helped. And also, with every camera by the sidelines clicking away, we made sure we were smiling and laughing and shaking hands for the photographers to capture.

Anything to distract us from exhaustion and the growing ache in our legs. The strategy worked.

This was us towards the finishing line (prolly at 750 or 250 meters more to go, it’s all so blurry now), we certainly look like two happy bunnies – just so happy to have completed the 5k.

sha and emz finish line

We also look very wet because for the final 1 km, it started raining very, very heavily. So yes we look very unglam here, but hey we are almost completing a 5km run – we have an excuse to look like this. And it was worth it.

Well I’m not gonna ruin this happy blog post, celebrating a milestone with how bad the crowd control and event organization was AFTER the run. Let’s just leave it at that.

Girls who completed the run got a pretty cool pocket mirror. YAY, we did the impossible and we have a memento for it!

Nike Goddess Run Pocket Mirror

In retrospect, I think both Emz and I did very well (we finished the race within an hour – without practice!) and we certainly made a good team. Throughout the run, we were together from start to end, motivating each other. Never once were we apart. That’s the point of a BFF run – it’s not supposed to be a competition, it’s supposed to be quality time with a friend. I could never ask for a better running partner! Till our next adventure together, Emz!:)

And special thanks to Earl for helping us capture most of our photos. To see our complete collection of the Nike Goddess Run photos, here’s a public Facebook link for it!
