Ice Monster in Bangkok

I briefly mentioned about Ice Monster in one of my posts on Bangkok food, but after my recent trip to Bangkok last weekend (yup 2 months after my first one), I figured it deserves a post of its own!

ice monster store

What is Ice Monster? Basically it’s a shaved ice dessert that has condensed milk mixed in with fruit toppings of your choice. It is absolutely yummy and I insist that it it a must visit with every trip to Bangkok.

As you can see in the image below, there are so many choices for the toppings. You can choose up to 3 toppings and it’s all very affordable. A regular sized cup with one topping costs 85 baht which amounts to abt S$3.50 and it’s a HUGE serving (just wait for the photos).

ice dessert menu

During my April trip, I tried the strawberry one (strawberries are like my default fruit for anything) and FP had longans as toppings:

strawberry ice dessert

And during my girly Bangkok trip last weekend (more on this in the next few blog posts), these were what we had. I had watermelons as topping because it was yet another really hot day in Bangkok and I wanted something thirst quenching, and Rara (my awesome travel partner) had strawberries AND bananas on hers. We were so, so happy when we saw that the banana slices were covered in chocolate sauce and nuts.

It was just a happy moment ok? Check this out:

bananas and strawberries and watermelon

I love how pretty everything from Ice Monster appears on photos! AHHH. It’s always such a happy thing to have, which is why (I repeat) this is a must-have when you go to Bangkok.

So far I’ve spotted two outlets: One is at the ever famous wholesale mall – Platinum Fashion Mall, and the other is at this fancy new all (which I will blog about soon) – Terminal 21.

You can also visit the Ice Monster website for more info. It’s mostly in Thai, but there’s nothing Google Translate cant help you understand! :P

Brunch & Dessert Buffet at Goodwood Park Hotel

The boyfriend and I did not spend much quality time this week so to make up for it, we decided to finally use the Goodwood Park voucher that a mutual friend gifted to us last August.

table setting

Upon reaching the venue (Coffee Lounge), we also decided to give the dessert buffet a try (because we love durian and also because it feels weird to be dining for free).

So the voucher we had entitled us to two main dishes: the nasi goreng (fried rice) and the laksa. So we had one of each. We expected the portion to be small, but it turned out to be very generous. Check these out:

goodwood laksa

This was my bowl of laksa. It certainly surpassed my expectations. Not only was the serving huge, they were very generous with the ingredients! There was fish cake, prawns and even shreds of chicken in the bowl. The gravy was absolutely rich and perfectly done. It was really a bowl of happiness.

nasi goreng

And this was the mister’s nasi goreng which was very, very good as well. It comes with chicken satay, fried egg, crackers and acar by the side. It looks really appetizing and it was also a very filling dish.

We were both very, very satisfied with these dishes and was really looking forward to helping ourselves to the desserts. Expectations set high by the main course and also thru hearsay. These were what I tried (didnt managed to take shots of BF’s dessert plate):

dessert plate

Ok to clarify, it was a dessert buffet which includes durian-centric selections. We were pretty disappointed by the variety of desserts (too little) and how it tasted (just normal, nothing too fantastic) or perhaps we just had high expectations.

So I started out with this pretty plate. I chose the mini vanilla and chocolate cones which has durian mousse in them (so cute, I couldn’t resist), a durian puff and a lovely fruit tart.

I swear sometimes I pick my food just because the look pretty.

And here’s my second plate:

goodwood cakes

For my second round, I had bubur terigu (which was pretty good), durian mousse cake (got overwhelming after awhile), chocolate opera cake, pengat durian, fresh fruits and marshamallow.

And then I had to stop because I got really full. I think the durian mousse cake should be cut in smaller slices as it got really difficult to eat after a few bites. Nice, but overwhelming.

My favourite was still the mini cone(s).

I don’t think we ate our money’s worth for the desserts but since the main course was free (and really, really good) – it makes up for it.

The price range for the dessert buffet:

$26.80++ per person (Dessert Buffet with Durian Pastries only)
$20.80++ per person (Top-up with any a la carte menu order)

(Got this from Goodwood Park’s official site but to digress, the price was slightly more pricy at the venue. If I remember correctly, it was $20-ish with main course and $30-ish for just the buffet. We paid about $77 for the buffet for both of us because the free dishes are not counted as an ala carte menu order).

But anyway, below is the address of Goodwood Park Hotel:

Dinner at Five and Dime Eatery

A couple of nights back, our group of friends gathered at Five and Dime Eatery – awaiting a birthday boy to arrive with his sweet girlfriend (she planned the surprise for him).

Once they neared our table for 10, we shouted “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!”. Of course he was surprised and pleased all around :)

I digress. This blog post about the food we had and about the restaurant. So let’s get to that!

five and dime entrance

The Decor

I was the first one there, my office being the nearest to the restaurant (which is situated along River Valley Road). The reservation was under my friend Carol’s name and I loved how the table was marked with this card. Don’t you just love how nice the handwriting is?

So much effort for something so simple. It’s the little things, really.

reservation card

I’m a sucker for handwritten notes.

What struck me was how small the restaurant was. But it was prettily decorated thus making it have that cozy, homely feel. I was seated at the far end of the restaurant against the wall, and these photos show my view from my seat. Carol did say that I might like the restaurant even more than Mr. Birthday Boy, and I think she’s right :)

 restaurant decor

I love the decor :)

A blackboard showcasing opening hours. There was another one beside it that displayed the specials of the day.

And there’s of course a bar:

Now that we’re done with the lovely decor, let’s get down to the most important items:

The Food

dinner menu

One thing I have to say is that even though the food was delicious, the dinner menu was really limited. There were 8 of us (2 couldn’t make it in the end), and we practically had almost all the mains.

For starters, we chose fried calamari which came with some sauce by the side. Do order more servings if you’re in a big group. We ordered 2 servings as the portion was quite little.

fried calamari

We also had meatballs:

meatballs

And here are our mains!

the burger

All 4 guys in the group had this burger, aptly named “The Burger”. I think it’s because it’s the only main that seems the most filling. You have the option to add a fried egg to it like the boys did.

salmon rocket salad

This was my Salmon Rocket Salad. I always try to choose salmon if it’s on the menu. This may seem like a light meal, but it was pretty filling and it was really good. In fact, it’s one of the dish recommendations in Foursquare.

mentaiko pasta

All of us had a taste of this one (Mentaiko Pasta) because we were forced to, lol. It tastes unique, a tad fishy with all the fish roe in it but yummy nonetheless. It may however require an acquired taste for fusion food.

cajun chicken

This was cajun chicken!

And lastly, fish and chips! It was served on a wooden platform. The fries was absolutely yummy :P

fish and chips

Front view of it:

fish and fries

It was unanimous how we love that there was a Five and Dime label on the fries carton. So cute.

For drinks, we had a mix of hot drinks like chamomile tea and hot chocolate. I had the hot chocolate (for dinner, go figure). I loved it. It’s just too little in my opinion – bigger cups please!

We also had cold drinks like orange juice and root beer float. Root beer float looks awesome!

In Conclusion

Overall, it was a pretty decent dinner with great company. You may want to make a reservation in advance (because the dining space is really limited) to snag a table.

I’m absolutely smitten by the pretty decor. They even sold some old school stationery but didn’t manage to take photos of them.

The food was gorgeous and the service was great. I just wish that the menu is not limited (don’t know about the lunch or brunch menu), but dinner menu didn’t give us much choices. Hopefully they will expand the food served because really, it was quite delicious.

Foodspotting in Bangkok Part 2

As promised, here’s part 2 of the Bangkok food blog post!

We’ve always been game to try out street food (please choose wisely!). So on our second night in Bangkok, we chanced upon a hidden alley near our hotel (a really dodgey area in Pratunam) that has a whole row of stalls selling street food.

So we decided to get a bit of everything to bring back to the hotel for an indoor picnic.

Some shots from the alley:

pad thai street food

Pad thai, being stir fried, right there and then. I could never resist a good pad thai, can you?

This was at a stall that was selling tom yam. You can choose if you want shrimp, squid and/or fish in your tom yam in whatever combination you want. I went for squid and shrimp!

fresh seafood

Freshly made tom yam bubbling away…

fresh tom yam

The uncle who was manning this stall was a friendly person who sings and chats and take photos with his customers. It was entertaining to watch him prepare your food.

tom yam uncle

We also bought mango salad (an absolute must!), chicken, oyster omelette and fried rice from the same street. This was our spread for the evening:

bangkok street food

And this amounted to… SGD11. This is why I will be obese if I stay in Thailand for too long. Now that I think about it, the pad thai was bought on a separate evening (as it’s not in the above photo).

One drink that we saw a lot on the streets for the 4 days we were there were these bottled orange drinks. It was the green peeled oranges. We finally caved in to it on our last day in Bangkok. And let’s just say one bottle wasn’t enough.

green orange juice

I’ve already told my mum to buy these green oranges if she sees them anywhere, best orange juice ever.

So here comes the part that all of you have been waiting for – the insect eating part! We went to Khao San Road specifically just to look for insects (talk about courting trouble). We walked all over Khao San but didn’t see a single insect stall. But just as we were going to give up and head back to the hotel (almost giving out a sigh of relieve to have escaped it), there it was in front of us.

Sorry have to use a screengrab from the bangkok montage video for this one:

khao san road insects

The aunty manning this store didn’t even give us a chance to choose what we want. We pointed asking her what’s this? what’s that? and she scooped them all.

But what we actually asked for were crickets and grasshoppers. Why grasshoppers? I don’t know, they looked harmless. So this was our bag of insects.

Our bag of insects:

fried insects

And here, my friends is the video of me eating ONE cricket. Please ignore the tired face and disheveled hair. I’ve been walking and shopping so much for three days by this time. Beyond exhausted, I’m only human. Ok here goes:

Sorry about the background noise from the TV, totally forgot to turn it off in our anxiety. Like I said in the video, the cricket is actually not too bad. Would have gone for a grasshopper but somehow when I reach into the bag to want to grab a grasshopper, I saw their dead faces staring at me and I just stopped, I couldn’t.

But a cricket was enough adventure for a day anyway!

Foodspotting in Bangkok Part 1

I’ve always been a fan of Thai food, but I think I’ve become an even bigger fan of it since I came back from Bangkok. I think if I ever decide to stay in Bangkok permanently, I will become severely obese. It is really food heaven. I mean, just check these photos out:

spicy seafood noodles

This plate of spicy seafood noodles was my first meal in Bangkok, at Platinum Mall’s food court. Between me and FP, our lunch amounted to a total of SGD3.50. Amazing. And these noodles were delicious and true to its word – it’s incredibly spicy.

egg white pancake

We were really curious when we saw these and asked what they are. They are, sweetened (to the max) egg white in a crispy pancake topped with coconut flakes. Of course we tried it. And while it was so very yummy, it was also very, very sweet. So one is enough.

coconut ice cream

Been craving for coconut ice cream since I last had it in Phuket last October, so I was so excited when I saw a stall in Chatuchak selling it. This time, the ice cream is served in a coconut shell and had toppings! This was mine with pineapples on it. FP’s coconut ice cream had glutinous rice and atap seeds. Freaking glorious, if I should say so myself.

Royal Fruit Thailand

I’ve never had these before till this trip. So obviously, the sight of these colourful lovelies that look like toy miniatures brightened up my day. I am attracted to bright and colourful things you see. Got like 10 of them and snacked on them while shopping, yummy! Oh they are called “Royal Fruit” by the way.

quail's eggs

This is a heart attack waiting to happen. Just because they are mini sized doesn’t mean they have lesser cholesterol. One quail egg has the same cholesterol of a normal sized egg. But hey you only live once (YOLO ya’ll!), lol.

We had these eggs together with this plate of sticky mango rice:

sticky mango rice

Precisely why I cannot live in Bangkok if I want to stay petite.

So somewhere in the middle of Chatuchak, we came across this small eatery that sells extremely yummy pad thai. So we ordered one each, not knowing that they are huge servings (they are served on trays, not plates – 2 people can share one plate!). The photo below does not do justice to the size of the plate (tray), but it looks so yummy doesn’t it?

pad thai bangkok

Each of us also ordered our usual of thai milk tea. Again, we didn’t know it was going to be a gigantic serving of milk tea. Get this – it came in FISHBOWL. So each of us had to finish a FISHBOWL worth of milk tea. Never had that much milk tea in a single seating in my life. Goodness.

fish bowl milk tea

While we are on the subject of milk tea, I was told (prior to the trip) to look out for this bubble tea chain called Dakasi. Spotted it on our first day in Bangkok, and of course tried it. It was so delicious.

dakasi milk tea

We also tried a strawberry pudding drink, that tasted like strawberry pocky. What’s not to like?! :)

At one of the malls we were at (I think it was Siam Paragon), we chanced upon these drinks that had herbal jelly in them.

herbal jelly drinks

We had the milk tea, and the ovaltine ones respectively. Of course it was good, but just one complaint about drinks in Bangkok – there’s always too much ice in them.

milk tea with herbal jelly

Speaking of desserts, we also had Ice Monster on one of the days because our legs were begging for mercy from all the shopping. It’s just fruits of your choice with shaved ice and condensed milk. Very nice on warm day (and Bangkok is very, very warm). But I also like how pretty it is in this photo:

strawberry ice monster

One more dessert photo before I end this. These ice lollys were spotted at Chatuchak market. There were other flavours but we chose lime, because it was the most thirst quenching – I guess (or we just needed something cold because it was so hot). It was very refreshing but melted too fast. But given the heat on that day, I don’t blame the lolly.

Okay, that’s it for now. This post is getting too long! Tonight I’ll post part 2 of it – all about street food!
